Through showing the women God’s love in a practical, tangible way, it is easier for them to begin to understand the eternal love of Christ and the saving grace available to them through faith.
For many of the women, we get permission from their slave owner to take them to the doctor or provide medical care. They are still not allowed to leave, but every time we help the women heal their body, a piece of their heart softens and their soul begins to heal as well. This help demonstrates to them that they have value and are loved.
For others, they are very ill and often do not recover. So we have a huge sense of urgency every day to reach as many of these women with the Gospel as possible. When their slave owner lets them go because they are so ill, we are able to offer them in their last days a loving home at Grace House. And for some, like this woman in the picture, she just wanted to go home at the end and share her testimony with her parents who sold her into slavery many years ago. Her forgiveness transformed them and their village before she went to Heaven.
Many of the men are homeless because of a physical problem. For some, they have always had a physical challenge. For most, however, something happened that caused the change, like being in a fire, losing a limb in an accident, having a stroke, or the onset of a mental illness. When the change occurs, many are abandoned. They become migrant workers at best, but usually end up homeless and destitute.
For many, after one or a series of surgeries, they are able to then learn a trade and become financially independent.
For others, surgery, medicine and/or physical therapy greatly helps their quality of life and can offer the possibility of employment. For some it only eases pain and they will require long-term care at our Grace House.
We are grateful for each one God brings to us and try to help them see themselves as God does—treasured children of God with a purpose on this earth for Kingdom work and to know Jesus.
